WELCOME
Welcome to the Department
of Horticulture. We are pleased that you havedecided to join
us. Graduate students play an important role by helping complete
project objectives and participating in departmental activities.
The transcripts of your academic achievement and the letters
of recommendation submitted with your application to the Graduate
College indicate that you will do well in your studies. Your
interaction with faculty and other graduate students is a vital
part of your graduate student training and of the University
effort. The Department of Horticulture is committed to helping
you develop and achieve your academic objectives.
Together, you and your
major professor will propose courses and select an area of research.
You will also work closely with a graduate committee to develop
your program of study. You should meet with your graduate committee
periodically to discuss your progress and keep them informed.
Become familiar with the Graduate Studies Bulletin which
contains a listing of courses available and the requirements
for graduate degrees. Those who have been awarded assistantships
are both graduate students and members of the Department of Horticulture
at the University of Nebraska and employees of the State of Nebraska.
Those with assistantships will wish to read the UNL Employee
Handbook. Departmental policies concerning the use of office,
laboratory, greenhouse and field facilities, and secretarial
services are described in this handbook. Policies concerning
the use of State vehicles, the purchase of supplies for project
research, University travel, and other information are also included.
If you have any questions, please ask your major professor or
the chair of the Graduate Studies Committee.
Every Fall, the chair of
the Graduate Studies Committee will organize an informational
meeting for ALL graduate students and faculty members. The purpose
is to foster communication among the graduate students as well
as between graduate students and faculty. If you don't receive
a notice concerning the annual Fall meeting, be sure to ask your
advisor. |
