GENERAL GRADUATE STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Graduate students are expected to read and follow the Department of Horticulture Graduate Student Handbook. A graduate student's position in the Department of Horticulture should be considered as a means to accomplish professional goals and not just a job. Horticulture graduate students are representatives of UNL, IANR and the Department of Horticulture. As such they are always expected to conduct themselves in a courteous and professional manner when dealing with university staff as well as clientele.

Graduate students are specifically responsible for the following:

- Meeting all deadlines and following all regulations and procedures outlined in this handbook and in the Graduate Studies Bulletin. No exceptions or waivers will be given to these obligations.

- Being familiar with dates pertinent to application for graduation and other important deadlines.

- Purchasing health insurance. Health insurance is not included in an assistantship or by paying tuition. All University of Nebraska-Lincoln students can purchase health insurance through the University Health Center. The cost will vary depending on whether you have paid student fees ESPECIALLY during the summer. Contact the University Health Center for rates.

- Preparing a thesis research proposal or a project proposal (Option II Masters degree), selecting a graduate or supervisory committee and file a Memorandum of Course work with the Graduate College, during the first semester of residency.

- Taking a departmental qualifying exam or the equivalent by the end of the second semester of residency.

- Presenting departmental seminars on the research or project proposal - 2 seminars per degree.
