GREENHOUSE AND CONTROLLED
ENVIRONMENT FACILITIES

The Horticulture Department currently has research greenhouse space available upon request. These requests should be made through your major professor and should be directed to Mr. Stacy Adams. Request forms are available from the receptionist desk or greenhouse manager.

Growth chambers are assigned by request and are available for a minimum of a one month period at a cost of $1.75 per day. All requests should be made through your major advisor to the greenhouse manager.

As per University policy smoking or chewing of tobacco is not allowed in any of the greenhouses due to the presence of TMV (tobacco mosaic virus) in cigarettes and other tobacco products.

Field research facilities are available at the Hort Gardens, ARDC and research and extension centers. Usually these are available through the major advisor's project.

General Greenhouse Guidelines
All users will receive specific guidelines from the greenhouse manager. These guidelines cover important items such as supplies. Be sure to get a copy!!

Watering, fertilizing and other cultural practices are the responsibility of the project, unless special arrangements are made. Students should consult with their major advisor about their responsibility to each project.

Individuals assigned greenhouse space are responsible for maintaining clean, orderly, and sanitary areas.

Requests for the use of unassigned greenhouse space can be made in writing to the greenhouse manager or Facilities Committee.

No facility modifications may be made without the consent of the Greenhouse Committee.

Adjustment of controls is the responsibility of the greenhouse manager.

Doors to greenhouses must be locked at all times after 5:00 p.m. (4:30 p.m. in summer), and on weekends and holidays. South exit doors to the research greenhouse are to remain locked unless in active use.

Greenhouse benches are not to be used for storage. Contact the greenhouse manager, if storage space is needed.

Hoses should be straightened out after use and nozzles hung up to keep them off of the ground and out of the aisles for health and safety reasons.

Keep doors between greenhouse sections closed at all times. This is important in preventing the spread of pests between sections as well as necessary for maintaining specific environmental conditions.

Plants should not be brought into the greenhouse or moved between greenhouses without notifying the greenhouse manager in advance.

Plant materials should be discarded as soon as they are no longer needed. Consult with the greenhouse manager as to appropriate disposal procedures.

No personal plants may be kept in the greenhouse.

SMOKING IS NOT PERMITTED IN THE GREENHOUSES OR HEADHOUSE FACILITIES AT ANY TIME, DUE TO FLAMMABILITY OF THE COVERINGS, CHEMICALS USED AND DISEASE CONTAMINATION.

Greenhouse equipment and supplies are to be used for department purposes only.

Greenhouse Safety Guidelines
- Wear closed-toe footwear.
- Do not drink water from any hoses or faucets in the greenhouses. Use drinking fountain located in headhouse.
- Always wash hands after working and before eating, drinking, or smoking.
- In the event of lightning, hail or high winds, immediately leave the greenhouse for a more secure structure, such as the headhouse.
- In the event of a fire, immediately evacuate the greenhouse, set off the fire alarm and notifying the authorities. Polycarbonate/acrylic greenhouse coverings are extremely flammable and the fumes are hazardous.
- Know the locations of tornado/storm shelters. (Research greenhouse shelter is in the seed cooler).
- Know the locations of fire alarms and fire extinguishers.
- In case of emergency dial "O" on University phones. The University operator will notify the proper authorities. Keep the line open until operator advises otherwise.
- No pets or unaccompanied children are allowed in the greenhouses.

Pest Control
Pest control is the responsibility of the greenhouse manager. Pest problems should be brought to the greenhouse manager's attention. COOPERATION WITH GREENHOUSE POLICIES IS ESSENTIAL TO ENSURE SAFE and EFFECTIVE PEST CONTROL. WARNING SIGNS WILL BE POSTED - DO NOT ENTER AN AREA AS LONG AS A SIGN IS IN PLACE. Signs are posted on or next to all doors. Pesticide applications will be made at the following times. Please do not use the facility until the appropriate re-entry time.

A. September through May: THURSDAY 10:00-12:00, re-entry Friday 8:00 or as coordinated by greenhouse manager and project leader.

B. June through August: THURSDAY 9:00-11:00, re-entry Friday 8:00.

Fumigation
Fumigations are performed as needed and may not necessarily follow the regular application schedule. Fumigations are made in the evening, after regular working hours. Due to the extremely dangerous fumes produced by fumigation, there is ABSOLUTELY NO ADMITTANCE to any part of the facilities until the following morning.

Be sure your plants are thoroughly watered before pesticide applications are made. This will reduce the likelihood of pesticide damage to your plants.

Do not leave equipment, clothing, etc. in greenhouses or on benches where they may become contaminated during pesticide applications.

Research Greenhouse Facilities
This range consists of five greenhouse units attached to headhouse support facilities (total of 15,552 sq. ft or 1445 sq. m) constructed in 1977 and renovated in 1990-91. They contain a computer-controlled hot water heating system and pad evaporation cooling, plus roof shade fabric (50% - in the summer only), in ground soil beds, mist propagation area, tap and distilled water, electricity, compressed air, high intensity discharge or fluorescent lamps automated black-out cloth system.

Growing Medium Preparation Facilities
Equipment is available for shredding, mixing, and steam pasteurizing growing media. Materials kept on hand for preparing mixes include topsoil, sand, sphagnum moss, peat, perlite and vermiculite. Dust masks and goggles are recommended when handling these materials and may be obtained from the greenhouse manager. Individuals using this facility must clean the area when they are finished. Soil mixes and mixing times must be coordinated with the greenhouse manager. Soil mix request forms are available from the greenhouse manager or receptionist desk. (See attached copy)

Seed Storage Room
Organized storage space is available for valuable seed. The seed storage room is maintained at 40 degrees F (4.4 degrees C)and 40% relative humidity. Seed should be labeled with individual's name and date when placed in storage. Check with greenhouse manager for storage space.

Cold Storage Room
Cold storage for materials other than seed is available in this room. The room is maintained at 40 degrees F (4.4 degrees C) with no relative humidity control (humidity tends to be high). Any materials stored should be labeled with individual's name and date when placed in storage.

Post-Harvest Vegetable Cold Storage
This storage is used primarily for post-harvest storage of crops at a temperature above 32 degrees F. Use is coordinated with the greenhouse manager.

Greenhouse Research Lab
Equipment available includes chemical exhaust hood, mechanical convection oven, Mettler top-loading balance, pH meter, freezer, leaf area meter, microwave oven, ice machine, ISCO Spectroradiometer. Utilities available include tap water, distilled water, electricity, compressed air, and natural gas. This lab has assigned users however it may be used during non peak periods by others. Contact the greenhouse manager if you need the lab.

Growth Chamber Facilities
The growth chambers are housed in Room 14 of the Horticulture Research Greenhouse. Requests for growth chamber space should be made to the greenhouse manager. Set up, program adjustment and other aspects of the management of the growth chambers are handled by the greenhouse manager.
